Personal Files/Data - where, how, …

You have access to our services listed below and to other services including data storage hosted centraly by the LMU and the LRZ (see there)

Homedir

You can store your own files in your homedir. Your homedir is accessible on all Client PCs via a network file system.

You can store any kind of document or data file there. You can also install software in your homedir. You can even store container images for completely independent software and os environments in your homedir. (e.g. podman, linux containers)

The config files for your Desktop Environment are stored here too.

Attention!

Do not create directories named ‘BIG’ or ‘FAST’ in your homedir. These names collide with BIG (read below) and are subject to its limitations. (FAST is a future project)

Quota

Your homedir has a quota. This means that the amount of data you can store there is limited. As of the start of 2025 : 150GB (soft) / 200 GB (hard)

You can simply request more qouta via an email providing your reasons. Please read the BIG Topic below first.

Besides tools to check your used space (ls, du. ..) you can use “df .” in a directory with qouta to see both used and free space.

Backup

The homedir is - when possible and required - backuped cyclicaly. (First Cyle 7, second 4, third 1)

BIG

Here you can store additional files - same as your homedir - but keep in mind the backup restrictions. After initialisation (read below) you will find a directory BIG in your homedir. All files stored there do not count against the homedir quota but against the seperate BIG quota.

This quota is calculated seperate from the homedir quota!
As of the start of 2025: 150GB (soft) / 200GB(hard)

You can simply request more quota via am email providing your reasons. These request are handled less strictly than requsts for more homedir quota.

Backup

BIG has no backup-

Files on the Client PC

You can store files in some folders on a Client PC. Keep in mind that these files will not be subject to backup and could be deleted on reboot.

You should place such files under a individual folder in /tmp to keep them seperate from other users. Some Abaki machines have /var/tmp1 and /var/tmp2. These are bigger local SSDs for temporary local files.

Gitlab (at CIP)

Gitlab can store and version arbitrary files. A direct filesystem like access is not possible.

Quota

There are currently no set restrictions. Users with unusually large project will be contacted by us.

Backup

Gitlab is - when possible - backuped cyclicaly.

Mails

Your Mailbox is on imap.cip.ifi.lmu.de. Webmail can be found at webmail.cip.ifi.lmu.de.

Quota

No set quota. Users with unusually large folders will be contacted by us.
